Ceiling of Lights Study

Project Description
Aid the Main Street District and the Boyd Foundation in extending the “Ceiling of Lights” for the remainder of Main Street to the South Carolina State House. Massey’s initial engagement included a study of the requirements needed to obtain construction estimates and take into final plans. Currently a “prototype” of the ceiling of lights is installed on the 1600 Block of Main Street.
Scope of Work
Study of supporting structure for a “Ceiling of Lights” over Main Street, Columbia, SC to extend from the 1200-1600 blocks.
Coordinate boring locations with Geotechnical Engineer
Map existing tree and utility locations to avoid conflicts
Investigate column and foundation installations to limit disturbances and/or utility relocations.
Key Challenges
Column placement to avoid underground utility conflicts.
All utilities are located underground.
Maintaining even spacing of columns for uniform “sag” of lights.
Unable to place guy wires for column support.
Avoiding trees to maintain picturesque Main Street
A hard ceiling of 23’ and hard deck of 18’.
Deflection limits of cabling during design events to maintain access of emergency vehicles.
Ice storms are the governing load.
